See & Do
Located further up the hutt valley, Upper Hutt is set against forested hills alongside the Hutt River. Its a city for those who love to get outside, enjoy the fresh air and outdoor fun.  The river is clear enough for trout fishing or stroll some of the 50 parks and reserves.  Popular among mountain bikers there are tracks in the valley for beginners or experts, Tunnel Gully Recreation Area in Pakuratahi Forest suits all riders.  Additionally if you are a whiz on two wheels, the Remutaka Cycle Trail is Wellington 115km wild ride, starting in Lower Hutt and heading north over to the Wairarapa and back. Break it up over several days to fully take the surroundings.

For the family take a trip out to Staglands which lets visitors freely immerse themselves with a range of native and exotic birds and animals.  Not about fences but about giving animals the space and habitats they need to live happily.  Perfect spot for kids to meet native creatives or cute farm animals, but don’t think its just for the kids.  Friends and couples wanting to get out of the city also enjoy the escape with free barbecues and an onsite cafe, there is something for everyone.
Eat & Drink
Just because its 35mins from Wellington City doesn’t mean its not full of great coffee and food spots.  Doozy Coffee in Upper Hutt is the only spot that offers Wellington’s CBD Havana beans, plus it also supplies sweet snacks from another local creator Fix Federation.  

Fancy a dog friendly cafe thats been a local favourite for over 10 years, look no further than Silverspoon restaurant and cafe.  Or maybe you are after a good old fashioned sandwich well look no further than Tricky’s Sandwich Co, this family owned shop covers all the classics like the Reuben, egg salad and ploughman through to something a bit more contemporary like pulled pork.  If you aren’t after a sandwich don’t worry they also offer salads, baked goods and pies.

In the evening pop along to the The Boiler Room.  Once dedicated to warming patrons of the historic Mayfair Theatre in the 1900s, this classy establishment warms up the Upper Hutt nights with cocktails, boutique wines and local craft beers.
Brewtown
The mighty Upper Hutt is home to some award-winning local breweries.  Panhead Custom Ales, Kereru Brewing, Te Are Brewing Company and Boneface Brewing Co are all located here, just a hop, skip and a jump from each other.   Whether you want to sip on custom batches, grab a tasting tray or build a custom case there is something for everyone.  
Dough Bakery
In the heart of Upper Hutt is Dough Bakery, you can’t miss out on their freshly baked goods, the donuts in particular are to die for!  Brought to you by the same people behind Pickle and Pie in Wellington, they are open from 7am, this is your spot for a morning coffee and breakfast snack before work.  
The Fig Tree
Hidden away in the leafy suburb of Heretaunga in a charming restored chapel is Fig Tree Cafe.  A beautiful spacious setting this cafe is another that offers fantastic coffee, using locally roasted Karamu coffee.  The menu and cabinet food caters to all with a variety of dietary friendly food.  Enjoy the sun with their outdoor seating or take in the restored chapels uniqueness while enjoy a more-ish treat or two.
